After a string of unsuccessful gimmick attempts, Wade Barrett finally found his niche with his "Bad News" character. When it first started, many were skeptical, as he spent most of his time next to the announcer's table, giving a slew of disparaging remarks to the crowd in wherever city he was in. Somehow, his "I'm afraid I've got some bad news!" phrase became catchy, and he commenced to speaking on a high rise. The popularity built eventually led him to an Intercontinental Championship, which he was only forced to relinquish due to injury.

Nearly twenty-five years earlier, there was another character of the same description. A calloused, no-nonsense villain named "Bad News" Brown. Brown came into the WWE by storm, making some noise by defeating his opponents with his "Ghetto Blaster" finishing maneuver. His two biggest foes were Bret Hart and Roddy Piper, in which the latter feud led to a match at WrestleMania.

Although the characters were both villainous, their approaches did slightly differ. While Barrett looked to conquer his opponents with mind games before the match, aggressively beating down his foes was more of Brown's objective. Regardless, both have left a mark in WWE history.
